Default Best way to go to upgrade.

I just got a new comp in july. I was planning to get 275 2-way SLI, but I decided to get 1, see what kind of frame rates I get, and decide from there. I also considered getting 2x285s, and since i got it so recently, i can still exchange my 275s. But since the price difference is enough to get 3-way SLI, I probably wont. From what I can tell, the only major difference between the 285, and the 275, is the bus speed and the ram. Is the 285 substantially better then the 275? Wouldn't 3-way 275 beat 2-way 285? Even though the third PCI-e slot is only 8x?

Honestly, it depends on the resolution you play at.

As jcmaz said, unless you plan on gaming at 2560x1600, 2-way 285s or 3-way 275s will likely be severe overkill. A single 275 will perform very well for most games at 1920x1200 and below, but it really does depend on what you plan on playing.

Thiers absolutely nothing "severley overkill" about running either 275 / 285 2 way SLI on a 1920 x 1200 Res monitor!! If you want to pop in a game and Max everything with no f_gging around with settings to get Maximum performance @ 1920 x 1200 - SLI 285 / 275 is perfect, preferably you'll be running that on an OC'd I7.

I have a 27" monitor at 1920x1200. Ive found that playing games like crysis and stalker on very high, my cpu never really got above 30% and stayed pretty cool, but my GTX 275 got up to 85C and still only managed 15 fps at best. Im probably going to get a second or mabye even a third 275 on boxing day. My question is, which of these would be most worth the money, and which of these would give the best performance:

2-way GTX 275 + 9800 GT
3-way GTX 275
2-way GTX 285
2-way GTX 285 + 9800 GT

I assume the 3-way 275 would win but the third one is only x8. Also, how much difference does the last PCI-e slot being x8 make? Was it a big mistake not to get the P6T Deluxe, which has 3 x16 slots?

1. Make sure you do a "clean install of Drivers", as in thoroughly remove old Drivers prior installing new using Driver Cleaner
2. OC your I7 to arou 3.4 Ghz if you can
3. Install Precision software and set-up some "Profiles"....Fan speed should be arou 70 - 75% for games like Crysis

I don't think so, the 16x Bandwidth on all slots is opnly noticeable when going for high Benchmarks, not for regular gaming.

does the third slot even matter if it runs at 4x? on the third card you only get about 10% performance (or might be less)

not worth it.

get gtx 275 sli for now and get something better when the time comes.

I never said that 2-way SLI of GTX 275 was overkill. SLI provides a great upgrade path, but the way I see it, SLI works on a system of diminishing returns as far as value is concerned. You seem to be best off going with a 2-way SLI of GTX 275 or a single GTX 295 for gaming at 1920x1200. In my opinion, anything more powerful than that gets into the realm of "overkill," depending of course on the games you play. For many people, it is probably not justifiable spending the extra $200 on 2-way 285s just to jump from 80fps to 100fps (over 275s). Likewise, it may not be justifiable spending the $250 for an extra 275 right away. Of course, if you're a diehard Crysis fan, then you'll never be satisfied

But this is an enthusiast community, and many people are addicted to pure performance, so value can go suck a fat one

Crysis was just the beginning my friend....theirs more yet to come...give Cryostasis a whirl at 1920 x 1200 with SLI 275's....thats another title that can even bring a Tri Sli 280 or Quad Sli 295 to its knees..

Its all about budget and expectations.....

What I'm saying is that Sli or Tri Sli certainly isn't specific to 30" 2K monitors...those too will be brought to their knees...
