4870x2 PSU Help

Hi there;

I just replaced my CF 4850's for a Sapphire 4870x2 and I am thinking I will need a new power suply. I was looking at 'PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad 750W' and 'OCZ GameXtreme 850w SLI'.

Im also wondering if its worth replacing my Phenom 9950BE for a Q6600 (which Ill lap the hell out of lol) I still hear the q6600 is great for overclocking, which I will put into a ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo.

I really dont know how much case fans use (power wise) but Im using an Antec 1200, cant be that much power.

What's your budget for PSU? I'd suggest Corsair HX750/TX750 or Antec TruePower New 750.

If you are planning on keeping the Antec 1200 for a while, maybe the Antec CP 850 would be a nice addition to your build.

Also, I wouldn't recommend going from a to a Q6600 because you are going from an "old" CPU which wasn't quite what it was supposed to be to a great CPU which is fairly old. Based on the price of the Q6600, I would recommend(depending on the parts you already own) a Phenom II X4 940 or a Q9550.

Firstly, stay away from the GameXtream series - old platform, flaky voltage regulation, more than a few cases of system problems stemming from them.

The HX750 is a newer and better platform than the TX750 (although both are excellent), but you'll pay a premium for it, both for its higher efficiency, as well as the modular interface. It's a budget decision, mostly, although the HX might have an edge in quietness if you push the system really hard. Probably not something you'd notice normally, certainly not over the video card itself.

Nice long cables and it can handle 2 4870X2's The 80mm fan is a bit noisey, but you shouldn't notice it with a 4870X2 with a stock cooler on it.

Isn't it made to be 'quite'? The PSU that is.


Also, what is a good after market cooler for that 4870x2

I own 2 of those PC P&C 750 Quad's. The first one is dead silent but the second one seems a little noisier when the fan spins up. 60 amps single 12v rail. Does 850w peak. Very good, very solid PSU imo. And cheap as borscht.

I ran a 4870X2 on mine for 9months without issue, it was just a bit louder than what I had gotten used to with my previous Antec PSU with a 120mm fan. I know others who ran 2 without issue on the PC P&C.

On the subject of aftermarket cooling, several companies make full coverage water blocks if you into that, I think Arctic Cooling is the only one to have an aftermarket air setup.
