NVIDIA 8800GT/9800GT/GTS250 or ATI 4830/4850

So I'm looking to upgrade my GPU for around $100 and I'm deciding whether I should go NVIDIA or ATI. I'm leaning to NVIDIA due to their superior folding over ATI, but ATI offers better bang for buck, especially with the recent 4850 that's going on sale at NCIX.

What would you guys do in this situation? Keep in mind I'm a casual gamer so I only game occasionally.

I own a 17" Sharp LL-172 monitor.

Edit: I found a XFX 9800GT on RFD for around $90. The purchase has not been finalized and won't be for another week.

i think this is more of what you like then which is better there so close i think i would ssay the 4850 but that's jmo.

If your going to buy a new Graphic card would lean towards the newer models, and the HD4830, it beats the pants off of the 9800GT and it's only $94. Also the HD4850 is only going for $100 after MIR. You said your only a causal gamer, and these cards are definitely the better bang for the buck. But if you set on F@H then go with 9800GT.

The thing I'm wondering about is whether I need to upgrade or not. Problem is that the last time I played a game (any game) on the computer, it was a couple months ago. I don't want to spend money on a better GPU because I want to upgrade.

Get the nVidia for some folding goodness geo.

But would I want to upgrade? I don't even fold much. I'm folding like only 12 hours a day, and a bit more over the weekends.

To tell the truth, I'm doing perfectly fine with the 9600GT. Heck I doubt I'll even touch my games much over the summer.

Kilauea June 11, 2009 06:03 PM

It is effectively unlikely that you would game much during summer... But if I were you, I would wait until you have a reason to get a new GPU. That way maybe you will save 100$ and maybe u will just buy one later gen card which will suit your needs a lot better than the one you are planning to buy.

But if you do buy now, I must say I am not into folding, so I don't know the little details, but I would surely get the 4850, its quite a good deal at 100$.

I would w8 for the next gen cards. I'm in the same boat as you. i love playing video games but on 22" monitor w/ 9600GT, it just won't cut it anymore.

I got a 17" monitor so a 9600GT is enough already. Plus going from what NVIDIA is doing lately with their GT200 cores, I have a feeling they'll be releasing only the high end GPUs such as GTX260/GTX280, then rebranding the older ones like what they did with the G92 cores.

There's also the fact that I'm limited to NVIDIA if I want to get the most out of my GPU folding. ATI folding is simply too slow and not worth it considering that most of the time my computer is spent on folding instead of playing intense games. The only game I played lately is Counter-Strike 1.6.
