Default which Nvidia gpu to buy: 275, 280 or 285?

I'm looking at switching from ATI to Nvidia, but I'm not sure which to buy. I plan on going SLI in the future but depending on the cost of the cards, that might be a while. I'm switching from dual 4850s, which outperform a stock 280, but not by much. Any suggestions on what I should get to replace them? (I dont care if performance is slightly lower than what I'm used to for the time being (because when I do finally SLI, 2x 275/280/285 would destroy 2x4850s).

Keep your 4850s and buy a nice card in October when the new generation of cards come along. Your 4850s are perfectly fine for now. Is there a reason why you want to switch to Nvidia? Both offer competitive products right now. Also, if you go SLI, I would seriously just get two cards at the same time. By the time you SLI and new card will be out, so it's a "now or never" kind of principle.

3 reasons:

1) 2x 4850's are good cards. dont get me wrong. but, in the future, they offer limited expansion - can you even do tri-crossfire? (and in october they will be worth a lot less too)
2) 1x 280 scores almost the same. I think its impressive that nvidia is cabable of putting out a single chip that almost bests a dual card config. (this also means that when I need more power, 2x 280 will work, or ever 3x 280)
3)for the past 4 or 5 years now I've stuck with ATI simply because of price. I've never had the top of the line graphics card, but I've generally bought decent cards at a cheaper price. I want to use an nvidia card this time round for a change

(ps. 1 4850 is already sold, so running 1x 4850 at 1900x1200 res just wont cut it LOL)

plus I'm in the middle of a "new build" I was only going to keep some of my stuff, but I went I7, which meant, ddr3 and before I knew it the only thing left to re-use was the gpu's

If that's the case, SLI 275's offer great bang for the buck for that resolution.

LOL Actually, I might as well include a 4th reason:

4)I'm stubborn (I havent been ignoring you bojangles. Your advice makes perfect sense. I'm just stubborn like that lol. I tried to take your advice but once I get an idea in my head...look out! Its just like how I convinced myself I didnt need to switch to I7 yet, and I have a mobo + cpu in the mail right now :P)

would a single 275 be comparable to 2x4850's? and would 2x 275's be way better?

I would even say less than 10% slower. And if you can get your 275 to EVGA's ftw speeds it's actually even faster than a stock 285!

GTX 275 pretty much sums up this generation of cards especially at FTW speeds, in a few months everybody will be drooling over 300 anyway.
