Yeah I found some Benches where the 275 did beat out the 280 consistently, but, that was solely based on both Cards running at thier respective Stock Clocks, as soon as you run the 280 at the same Clocks speeds as the 275 the additional Bandwidth, ROP's and Memory will all shine once again.
Lets face it....who runs a 260 / 275 / 280 / 285 at Stock Clocks.

Stock Clocks on my 280 SSC - 648 Core / 1161 Memory / 1404 Shaders
Presently OC'd to 720 Core / 1250 Memory / 1458 Shaders
Bandwidth 160.0 GB/s
ROP's 32
Shaders 240
Bus Width 512 Bit
Pixel Fill Rate 22.6 GPixels

Trying to see what kind of clocks my GTX 260 will get right now, so far 700 core 1500 shaders and 1100x2 memory seems to be ok, temps around 75 - 80c though.

Also figured out my 790i refuses to run anything higher then 1600mhz fsb with 4 sticks of ram installed...

although it does consume more power of course.
And really Magic..you nailed it...thats my only beef with thses 280's is the power consumption and 65nm Tech.......

Tri Sli on a 1kW is fine for 3 x 285's or 2 x 295's...but 3 x 280's draw a considerable amount of power more than those, particularly when you start getting into some high OC's.

My old GTX 260 Core 216 would OC like crazy!!!! I cannot remember what the Shaders / Memory were at, but I had the Core at 730 Mhz and the Temps on that Card were never exceeded 68c....a ran a 3 hr FEAR 2 session last night and one of 280's top out at 74c, but for the most part they were between 66 - 72c....that was with Fan speed set manually to 85%.

Fans manually set to 65%, its about the point where its almost inaudiable to me, retested at 710 core, tops out at 74c, not bad.

Not for that Fan Speed...that is good! Here are my Fan profiles used in Precision all manually set:
1. 50% for idle / Internet
2. 70% some games
3. 85% graphic intensive games Crysis / Warhead and even FEAR 2

Yeah I think im going to follow you on that, games where I wear a headset ill run at 85%, I know between 85% and 100% there is little difference or even sometimes you gain heat by running fan at 100%, I know my 9800GTX+ did it, was the oddest thing. I am very happy with this card now though, just disapointed in my motherboard =( right now 3.6ghz @ 1.22v ram at 1600mhz cl 8 is ROCK SOLID, 14 hours of Orthos blend, 4 hours of orthos small FFTs, and 20 passes of linpak, im looking at orthos max temps around 52,54. and with linpak 63 max. I know theres more potential here but apparently its a more common thing that this motherboard wont go above 1600mhz with 4 sticks of ram =(

Sorry for the thread hyjack =(

Glad to hear you got your Board back!! You could always go with 2 sticks RAM and see how your OC goes....my 2nd Rig is 2 sticks 2Gb Mushkins (4GB)...thats probably why your having problems getting past 3.6 Ghz...
We are jacking this thread...sorry.

I think $309 for a new GTX280 is hard to beat, honestly I'd buy it over a 275 just for the extra memory even if it has the same performance.I don't think you could go wrong with either, both seem to be damn good cards and I couldn't really care less about power consumption.

Well like Rj said the lower power consumption means less cost for tri sli, price vs performance, considering the GTX 275s have been seen as low as $260 and you can get away with a lower rated psu, the GTX 275 is a VERY stron contender vs both the GTX 280/GTX 285, if your going for raw brute strength though I agree the GTX 280/5 is a better call, its just more costly without gaining much performance for the cost.
