dual 4850x2 in quad crossfire ($684) heres some benchmarks for this card

dual EVGA gtx 285's in sli ($847)

or

tri EVGA gtx 275's in sli ($960)

If you have the coin go with the 2 x GTX 285's....

System specs and gaming resolution?

I'd go with the dual GTX285 or dual GTX275, preferably the dual GTX275. No Tri-SLI for me.

im in the process of this build for my friend and the monitor will be a benq e2200

and btw I heard that the gt295 has driver issues

Im not sure why but I find that dual 4850x2's are very appealing as one card gives almost the same performance as the 4870x2(only a 2-5 fps difference in most games with one card comparison)

I haven't heard this at all...as a matter of fact the boys running Quad Sli 295's are pumping out some amazing Benches.......

except for I could only afford one of the 295's

still for only mid $600 and to receive the same performance as 2 4870x2's I think that the 2 4850x2's is a good idea but I want to know if 2 285's would beat 2 4850x2's and by how much?

No idea...Google it.....I do know that 2 285's are a little better than my 2 x 280's....and quite frankly...they rock on my 1920 x 1200 res...any game...Max everything!

Dude, just buy 1 GTX 295 for now and save the rest of the money untill you can find a good priced on a used GTX 295.

Don't worry, your e-pen will still be huge.

I read a review some time ago now that showed (ATi) GPU's didn't scale well beyond 3 GPU's. Tri-fire was a good thing but Quad-fire sucked iirc. But then drivers may have or may change that in the future. I'm not sure. But I think I would stay away from 4 GPU solutions for the time being. Unless it's for a folding farm. Heh, folding farm in a box!
