maybe upgrade the CPU before the video card? I don't think is worth upgrading an 9600GT to a GTS250

The op would see a good lift in frame rates going from the 9600gt to the GTS 250, he'd even see a good increase going to a 9800GT. the 9600gt is a very low end graphics card thats meant for very light gaming, the GTS 250 is a very good mid ranged gaming graphics card that atleast doubles the performance of the 9600GT.

The Games of Christmas '08: GPU Performance Part II

the 9600GT at 1680X1050 is more than acceptable, it's not that far from 9800GT, it's not that low end

His processor may bottleneck a GTS250

EDIT : and the driver use for the testing is 180.48, it should only improve with the 182.50

Not sure how they figure a 9600GT gets 35fps @ 16:10 on farcry 2 when my dual 9800GTXs with maxed graphics but not max AA gets 40fps avg... Reguardless I dont call anything lower then 60 fps acceptable, but thats just me.

yo dudes, you still havn't ask what kinda games he plays.

If its mostly First person shooter i think he should be fine with the dual core.

If you don't play with AA then a 9800gt will even do. my 8800gt beats the ati 4850 with low AA by 2FPS or so (talking about games that have the nvidia logo at start up)

it will depend on the budget of the OP, but I recommend upgrade the CPU first

Upgrading CPU for the OP means upgrading motherboard as well as his doesnt support the AM2+ platforms, theres no point upgrading his CPU to a phenom I... He would need to spend atleast $300 for an upgraded CPU to really be worth it (after shipping and tax) where as a GTS 250 SC would cost him $130 and the 9800GT SCs are going for $108.
