Default ATI fan control

Been monitoring my new 4870 i picked recently, and ive noticed that ATI seems to let this card get really hot. Currently its idling @ 71 celcius with the fan 16%. now i know i can remedy the situation by simply turning up the fan speed, but is is this normal ati operating temps or is this due to the great drivers ati has (<--- insert sarcasm lol).My card works fine and zero issues, was just curious if anyone else noticed this with 9.4 cat.

that was all on auto and temps were according to CCC. Ive used overdrive and running my card @ 790/1100 witht he fan speed @ 55%. Its currently being reported as 97% under load with F@H and the temps havent gone over 50 yet. I do admit it is quite loud, but running very cool. So i guess to answer my own question, ATI has some really lousy temp management software considering crummy warranty lol.

AFAIC if it's idling at 71c with stock bios fan settings I'd be stressing the hell out of it under full load to try to get it to fail so that I could RMA it.

Ginger, you must have not had a pc before vgas had thermal diodes...guess what temp AT 9800/9800XT ran @?

Perfectly normal. Cards will throttle @ 115c. current FAH temps on UNIT 4756 is 76/86/86.

My second card is 4c cooler.

My third card is 2c cooler.

All hit 100c on load, no problem. none will crash or artifact, whne used on thier own.

Get into CrossfireX though, and I'm having issues like you wouldn't beleive. No RMA, either. Techs at stores say they found no issues, which of course is crap, and being Sapphire cards, I'm SOL. Store didn't test for long enough, nor did they bother to check error logs... amateurs.

i remember my old 9800 XT, i had put a high end cpu cooler on it (thermaltake volcano 12) and even then it got brutally hot to the touch. I bought the card 2nd hand so i dont think ill be breaking it in hope of an RMA lol. Thank god for a case with lots of airflow and a cold ass basement. (will i get a spanking for saying ass?)

Yeah, but he's got 71c Idle temps, not load temps. That can't be right.

edit: Last time I RMA'd a Saphire card (1950pro) I handed over the full test log of what I put it through to demonstrate that I had a problem that could be replicated at will (took between 14 & 16 minutes for the card to fail).

In that case, I think I'd consider a third party cooling solution, but you never know... does it fail with the stock fan settings under load?

i will never ever buy a sapphire product. I got burned very recently on a 3870x2 (the card worked for 2 hours and it died). Sapphire not only has nazi tight restrictions on RMA, they dont actually handle the RMA process themselves and you have to send said product to hong kong.

No the fan seems to ramp up according to use, i just thought it was odd that when im in strict 2D mode the fan goes to 16% and it idles at 70+. Card hasnt had a single issue yet in any shape or form and ive been running it ragged looking for something to complain about ati in general, not the person i got the card from lol. (die hard nvidia fan normally lol)

According to ATI rep for Canada, High end ATI GPU would go by 96c full load and are able to resist over 100c. But don't let CCC control your fan, they are made to stay silent. Use Riva tuner and test your fan to a noise that you can handle and maybe sleep to if your PC is in the bedroom. Again don't worry about this temp and do not RMA the card for nothing because she is going to be denided. the main difference between ATI and Nvidia are the idle temp and load temp. ATI can go from 71 to 81 when Nvidia can go from 35 to 65. A difference wich is probably in the Gddr5 or in the GPU architecture. If you find the card anoying and running like a turbo jet, just get a new GPU cooler, Arctic cooling are doing the best in the moment. For a 4870 I realy apreciate the Accelero twin turbo. Realy huge and some bad for cross fire, some over weight to, but realy nice cooling capacities and priceless.

P.M. for more details on anything, that's my job in real life ;)
