Very good review. I'd like to echo that game developers implement DX 10.1 in all future games. Seems to really make a difference. Shame that they removed support for it in Assassin's Creed.

It all comes down to time. I received the HD 4890 last Thursday, finished setting up the test system on Thursday night and received the GTX 275 on Monday night. Sacrifices had to be made somewhere.

I'm holding my breath until I see them in stores but I suspect they'll retail between the price of the 260 and 280s obviously. I just saw the review, so I pulled up this The Games of Christmas '08: GPU Performance Part 1

because I just bought the egg deal gtx 280 for $290 and unless drivers have changed the gtx 275 seems to beat out the gtx 280, so it looks like the gtx 280 wasn't that good of a deal after all.

Very nice reviews there. The 4890 is a little beast!

The EK 4870 FC block may just about fit I think. The only changes to the layout seem to be around the VRM area at the back and the addition of that "extra middle chip" in between the 2 pulse chips and the "old 4870" voltera chip.

Unlike some other FC blocks, The detachable plate on the EK 4870 has a long ridge that would cover the VRM's no problem at the back. The middle chip, though, may not be fully covered by the machined ridge that covers the VTECH chip-I guess some extra pads might work to get the other "half" of that middle chip to contact the block. I'll have a go anyway. I don't think the cooling of the "middle chip" is as much of an issue c.w with cooling the VRM's.

If that fails maybe Eddy from EK can sell a plate designed for the 4890 to screw into the main body of the EK block?

Anyways, that 4890 is impressive. I may have to sell off my GTX280 and pick one of these up. Im convinced that Nvidia's AA is dumbed down which is the only reason for such a large difference only when AA is applyed in every test. From what I've seen AA on a 4870 looks much better than on a GTX280, plus it can pull off much more AA.

From the comments here, I think everyone seems to be paying alot of attention to the HD 4890. So, the question begs to be asked: as consumers, how do you feel about the paper launch by Nvidia? Does it mean you are ignoring their launch until stock becomes available?

I would say you could chalk that up to 50% or so of the focus.
What good is there knowing how well something performs when You can't get your hands on it.
In the age of Technology we become fickle and more prone to snap decisions IMO.
That, and a lot of people are probably Fans of ATI/AMD here so with the launch of something that is cooler (running) and better performing than a 4870, it is really something to look forward too.

Good detailed Review Sky, as we all have come to expect from you and the other Reviewers here at HWC.

I will agree that an aggressive fan profile will not suit everyone, when noise comes into play some people can be finicky. However, that being said, if you target the more enthusiast crowd , our rigs are already running loud from whatever cooling solutions we have so .... its really hit or miss depending on who you ask and who is buying it.

All in all, 4890 is very good IMO. I would like to see a Production 275 though..
