A low resolution will bottleneck it far more than a CPU that is not fast enough. 4870X2 is meant for 1920X1200 and higher resolutions and TONS of AA/AF and max settings.

I'm always for a quad. The arguement that quad cores don't get used in games just doesn't wash anymore.

Pretty much every game that's being released is not optimized to use 4 cores, so I don't think dual's are really worth it anymore.

As long as you're planning on giving that quad an overclock, my vote goes towards the Q9550. We've still got a ways to go before quad is the norm, but we're definitely making some progress.

Yeah- You probably won't experience much difference in bottleneck but I'd still go for the quad for the future. I shouldn't talk though- I have a GTX 850 on the way for my HTPC which is running a conroe e6400. It will always be used at 1920X1200 though so I'm not really sure how bad it will be.
