Default 9800gtx+ oddness. Input requested

This just started happening randomly in the last couple of weeks. Every now and then, I completely lose video right in the middle of a session. I could be running for an hour, or maybe two, or only ten minutes. The monitor actually flashes the power light as if it had been left on when the computer shut down. I tried deleting drivers and putting in a new set, but no luck - it still happens once in a while - like every third day or so. Weird though, I can play FarCry2 for three hours straight and no trouble. Then next time I'm on, I lose video with only a browser open? Driver version is 7.15.0011.8122.

I had a similar problem with my 9800gx2. I ended up using compressed air and blowing as much of the dust buildup out of it as possible. It seemed to work, as the card didn't do that afterwards.

OK- worth a try for sure. I'll have to run out and get a can of air in the AM.

I found that only starting yesterday my screen would get like a thousand tiny black squares, and everything would freeze until i did a hard restart. I installed the acellero xtreme and its being cooled 10 times more than the stock cooler..... i don't know what could cause that...

element291 - when I googled this last night I kept coming up with threads about your problem - seems to be fairly common? Mine is different in that all video just stops. I'm going to try the air clean and then if I have to I will RMA to XFX. Then we will find out how good they are. Do you send it back to NCIX or right to XFX< anybody know?

It's an epidemic problem with all nvidia 9 series cards, that shuts themselves off all of a sudden. It's a problem with the overvoltage protection circuit, so it's a hardware, not driver problem. There are huge threads about it on the evga and nvidia forums. just do a search for black screen of death for 9600 and 9800gt cards on google.

examples:

9600gt black screen sound loop - Google Search

NVIDIA Forums > 9600GT Black Screen of Death!

Yes there is a lot of ideas on this out there and a lot of fellows have the same two problems: either the black screen of death (my problem) or the weird checkerboard problem. Sigh. I just want it to work properly - could care less about getting the last 3% of performance out of it.

underclock your card and problems should go away. However, you won't be getting all the performance you are entitled to. I've underclocked my card from 675 MHz to 608 MHz and the problems went away completely. I can RMA it but I don't have a back up card and I can't go 2+ weeks without a vid card. With these problems and XFX making ATI cards now, this will be the last Nvidia card I'm buying, to me honest.
