4870 1GB clocking

So, I finally installed on of my 4870's into my rig...and started playing.

I tried to max out CCC gpu speeds(850mhz), but that led to a crash. 825 was no go either...

So I went with 800mhz, 1000mhz mem, and let it loop some GRiD for an hour and 15 minutes...no problem. Upped the ram to 1040, tested again, not a single artifact. I'm currently working on higher.

So, the questions I have, is how others are doing...seen some Toxic Sapphire cards not even reach 790...and I got a plain sapphire 1gb, blue pcb, newer cooler(which is just as noisy as my 2900XT..)...

Toughts, comments, flames? All welcome....

I am going to pick up this very same card tomorrow and will be running it under water cooling, I will report back with my findings. My current 512MB 4870 will run 790/1100 all day long (max CCC).

I have a Asus 4870 1GB Dark Knight edition and I've tested it heavily with 840/975 and it runs flawlessly. Haven't pushed it beyond 975 for memory and the system seems to lock at 850 core speed. Gives me a pretty good increase in performance.

I flashed the bios' on both of my cards to run at 840/900. Running the memory any higher was a bit glitchy in some games and in 3DMark. They've been rock solid for me.

palit 4870 sonic runs perfect at 790/1100 but ther is very little fps increase in any game so i it run at stock

Thank you Sapphire and your damnable non-reference design. I have to chop off a piece of my waterblock to get it to fit so I will be delayed an hour or so while I do surgery on the waterblock.

Yeah, I feel ya.

However, I've now tested both of my cards(one just arrived yesterday), and I don't feel that watercooling will bring alot of benefits, unless you increase the operating voltage.


My second card will only do 785/1020. Using profile editing, however, allows for both cards to run @ 840mhz, and the first, to run 850.

You can adjust voltage for the gpu within a profile, BTW.

Yeah, I watercool for temps more than anything. I am pulling my card out now to finally get-er-dun.

I've been doing some research on this product, lately, and the word on the street is that there were two series of RV770 (Radeon HD 4870 1GB) produced-- I believe, with regards to Sapphire, their series-II RV770 carries the part number 100259-1GL (black cooler shroud). The claim is that the second series was typically more suitable to overclock. I have not yet found any evidence linking the series-II RV770 with what ATi announced as the "Super RV770" breed that uses a reworked BIOS.

It seems the new cards have analogue power section, which would account for the better clocks, imho. The digital PWM on the first series was a bit anemic; they should not have withheld from putting on the last phase.
