Default 4850 and athlon x2 2ghz cpu will cause bottleneck

i was thinking of buying a 4850 for my computer but im runing a dual core 2ghz cpu and i want cheap upgrade to play games for another about six months tell i can afford to buy my new phenom x4. right now i got a 3870 and its geting pretty slow and i know that with a slow cpu you dont allways get a huge incress in your graphics card. but what i was wondering is it worth buying 4850 and runing it on my old cpu or should i put my money into a new cpu upgrade wich for me means i got to get a new motherboard, memmory and cpu wich means like 5 or 6 hundred dollars compared to 200 bucks for a new vid card wich ill need when i upgrade to a new cpu anyway. What do u thinks a better idea upgrade to quad core or new vid card?

That's a tough sell. Really, it's not just about raw cpu speed, but L1/L2/L3 cache sizes, chipset, etc...

what motherboard are you using? Could be skt939/sktAM2...

I mean, I'm running a 2900XT, comparable to your 3870...I can't say I have much complaints about it, using an E8400 @533x7.5(4ghz), given I'm more than aware it's not quite enough to play games on "high" settings...

I mean, if your system isn't overclocked, and the board is capable, buying the vga and potentially overclocking your cpu would allow you to get a bit more enjoyment out of your current rig...

But also, if your rig is a bit old, you might need a new psu as well...

Well I think you'd be best off upgrading the CPU since I'm guessing your still on socket 939...

The HD3870 isn't THAT slow, though you'd probably see some gains moving to a HD4850 but that CPU will most likely hold it back quite a bit.

You could get a E7400 ($150), P43 motherboard ($98), 4GB of DDR2 RAM ($55) and that's just over $300. Of course, assuming your power supply is fine. That upgrade would be much more worth it than a HD4850 IMO since it'd be useful daily and not just for gaming, and well your HD3870 would probably even perform better. And well you could throw in the HD4850 without worries when you have money for one.

Ya, but he said he want'd an AMD chip.
If I were you Chief OP!

I'd overclock that cpu to 2500 mgz, shouldn't be a problem!...and don't buy anything
'till you have enough money saved up. AM3's are right around the corner as well as new video cards from ATI.
JD rom is right in questioning your PSU.
A 4850 might bust your PSU, or worse yet, the card too.

Especially when this sounds like a socket 939 rig so that PSU would have quite the age on it meaning the components are probably well worn. And who knows, might of not even been a high quality unit to begin with...

i have dual core 2800+ 2ghz oced to 2.3ghz with artic cooler on msi 939 mobo with 1 gig of ram two hard drives. I have 550watt psu i belive its two rail. with 3870 ati video card! my mobo is matx dont remember the model number or chipset off hand but it has no voltage adjustaments for overclocking only bus setings witch makes it hard to oc my cpu! ive goten 2.5 ghz out of it but i can only run it for like 4 to 6 hours and than becomes unstable if i could bump the voltage i know i could get alittle more out of it! I want to get msi k9a2 - cf i belive thats the right model # with a phenom x4 perferbly b3steping. hear the b3steping better for ocing! I like amd for there ocing abiltys hence why i want an amd and not intel plus amd is cheaper than intel! when you got 4 kids cheaper is better! sorry about not giving my specs i was being rushed by the girlfriend for the internet and thanks for the info so far.
