Well.... the supplier only wanted to give me an 80% credit towards an upgrade so I opted to get a new 1950pro in the hopes that I would finally get lucky, or that this one would crap out quickly to give me more ammunition on the next RMA.....

To my surprise, the new one I recieved has a remodeled cooler & completely different voltage regulation circuitry. (different part# as well)

I'm assuming that this has been done to solve the VRM issues they've been having so hopefully my 1950pro woes are over with.

I'll post up some pics by the weekend showing the difference.

Ok folks, just got my 4'th 1950pro PCIe and this one's got completely different voltage regulation circuitry so hopefully my black screen issues will be a thing of the past.....

This is the one I just recieved. P/N 188-01E19-00ASA.
Notice the shorter cooler and the large caps just aft of the cooler. The fan is also forward on this model and aft on the "older" one.

This is the "older" one with the cooler installed. P/N 88-1E19-10-SA.
The cooler on this one covers the entire aft section of the card, and the large caps are not present.

This is the "older" version without the cooler. Here we can see a long row of smaller on-board caps which are also present on the back side of the board.

It remains to be seen if this is actually a newer version that solves my problem, or if it's really old stock (didn't have to blow off any dust.... :) ).

You can consider yourself fortunate that you just ran into black screen issues and that's all. I was in a similar situation as you a few years ago with BFG's 6800GT card. The first two cards reached their temp threshold easily, so I had to RMA them. The third card sparked, killing my monitor entirely, and blew a fuse at the same time.

I stay away from BFG now.

Heh.... I tried that too, but I was gpu folding while away for the weekend... mine didn't fare as well as yours. :)

On a happier note, it was nice to be able to slap an old AGP card onto this mobo.... it's certainly a lot better than the PCI card I would have had to use as backup.... :)

i had that card but AGP and it would not even work at all, some times it ran great others it dies its cause Saphire has glitch in the firmware which makes it think another monitor is using it.(hence black screen) i RMA'ed it for the HIS dual dvi version, same chipset . I can play all games at max at 1440x900 and its agp sure agp is dead but i got budget so im glad im getting this mobo (in the mail with my e6420. Oh and those black chips on the front and back are the mem u need to really have heatsinks on those.

Just a quick update for folks who might be considering a Sapphire X1950pro but are concerned about the well reported issues with VRM overheating at load.

I've been using the new revision (pics above to verify which version you've got) for almost a full two months and so far no problems at all.

Just as motherboard makers seem to be leaning towards big honking caps for their voltage regulation CCTs, this upgrade seems to have done the trick for Sapphire's 1950pro line.

This card also seems to have some headroom for OC'ing which is something the older revision didn't have.

I'm able to bump it up to 620/769 using just the built in Overdrive (works in cat 7.5 & 7.6) before starting to see some spotting from aritifacting.
