Default Hardware Canucks 4850x2 Review.....

Still waiting for your review. Really think this site does great reviews, hope you guys
get your hands on one or decide to do a review on the 4850x2 some time soon. It
would be actually cool if you showed side by side comparisons of the gtx295, 4870x2, and
4850x2.

To sum it up: the card was never meant to exist outside of a ploy to divert sales away from Nvidia. Palit didn't support it, nor did TUL / Powercolor or Asus or Gigabyte or HIS or....well, you get it. At this point, with the lack of availability or support manufacturers, I count it a dead duck that no amount of press coverage will revive. All that is left is the odd Sapphire card here and there.

I see, I heard other manufacturers would eventually support it...well if you ever get your hands one I guess you wouldn't do the review? Seems like a lot of benches, the card does well against the 4870x2 and gtx280 at a really good price point. Thanks for the response SKY...just been looking for a good review...and there are none out there whatsoever.

Here is the issue: at this point it is a question of time invested versus actual readership who will be interested in this product. With so few cards in the channel and so few supporting manufacturers (so few = 1) it would be alot of time invested on my part for a product which will never be widely available. If ATI, Sapphire or anyone else can prove me wrong about this being nothing more than a marketing stunt, then I will be happy to spend the 30+ hours it takes to test and write up a review for the HD 4850 X2.

On a personal note, I really wish more AIBs had stepped on to support this card but ATI made it impossible for them to do so. Basically, since there was never a reference design, board partners were forced to design this card from the ground up and then submit it to ATI's QA labs for approval before sales. Add to that the fact that it would be up to the manufacturers to get UL, CuL, RoHS, etc. approvals for the card.

So what did that mean in this economic climate? The death of a card before it was even released. Manufacturers didn't want to invest the time or money for all of this which meant either dropping the X2 idea altogether, building their own card or license the design en masse from Sapphire / PC Partner. Guess which they chose?

My "sum up" was just dual GPU configurations, but clearly it isn't as powerful as some of the single gpu configurations.
