Default recommended brand + overclocked models for HD 4870 x2

i was just wondering which retailer brand i should be going with for a HD 4870 x2 card. i WILL be removing the stock heatsink(i've heard these cards are a mess when to comes to temp and noise), so a mod-friendly warranty would be nice. :)

also, i've seen some overclocked hd4870x2 cards out there. I can't think of any at the moment, but is anyone aware of such a card that gives an appreciable boost in performance? also, how hard would it be to do such an overclock yourself(on a x58 chipset)?

When it comes to overclocking, I wouldn't bother. I'm running all my games at 1920x1200 without a hitch. and if you manually control the fan in CCC, heat isn't much of an issue. I just finished looking through the warranty information of several brands, and none of them seem to cover modding.

As hard as this is for me, forget the 4870x2. Get GTX280 and save some cash. Better warranty and more modding-friendly brands mean a better experience for you.

True, but will not warranty, if any damages results while modded.

Not so true, they warrantied 2 of my 3870's, both had been volt-modded and were killed by folding at 1Ghz 24/7 at high voltage. One of them even had a backplate that I had cut in half to fit it in the case.

They returned me 2 brand new 3870's of a much newer revision, no questions asked. It did, however, take about 3 months.

Huh, Well I guess they need to be a little more clear in their warranty statement.
