My System Specs

Default 1650X1080 max resolution, what card?

I dont plan on upgrading to bigger then 22" wide for along time, if anything i'll get a better quality screen before going bigger. Same for my computer, I dont plan on upgrading much in the near future.

My 9800GX2 now "sold"(supposed ot be picked up at lunch today), I'll be shopping for another card.

What would be the best bang for the buck using my rig specs below?

Some people say a 4870/GTX 260 would be overkill since i'm not going 1920X1200. A good quality 4850/9800GTX would be enough. The price difference between the 2 is not very big however... Especially when specials like the 260 GTX at futureshop comes up.

From my research it seems like anything above that and it's the rest of my system that would end up being the bottleneck also. Especially my mobo not being PCI2.0. True?

My 9800GX2 pulled awesome 3dmark06 scores, rans awesome on First Person Shooter type games but I play WoW mainly and then FPS when I actually have time to game so I want it to look good in WoW before anything else, something the 9800GX2 could not do even if it had power up the wazoo since SLI is not supported in that game and the wife's 8800GTS ran way better then me.

Thanks for any advice

Nevermind part of the question, found that thread...

Best GPU for 1650x1080 res?

Still one part of my question remains... at what point would the choke point be my mobo/ram?

i use a 4850 for my 20" widescreen. It's very good and rarely does it get choppy. I have yet to try these new far cry and fallout games, but for half life 2, i am impressed with the performance. If i get a 24" monitor to put in 1920x1200, i will probably buy another 4850 for x-fire, or trade up for a 4870x2. I am using an amd 5000b.e., but i haven't run any 3dmark tests on the machine yet.

IMHO, to have a optimal usage of the graphics power, a 4870 or a GTX 260 is the best choices for that resolution. I have a Dell 2007WFP with a resolution of 1680x1050 and my GTX 260 is perfect, no problem pushing the pixels even with the latest games.

Skyllz, I have a q6600@3.6 and p5k-premium, g15 and nostromo too! 4gb mushkin@1000. Loving that 260 gtx we talked about.

4gb of ram is overkill, 2gb is fine. I've never seen my mem usage past 50% in any game, even in vista x64.

LOL your hardware is already way better than mine. But here's my input. Other than Crysis I max any game on my 8800GT at 1680x1050 no problem. Crysis maxed I get about 25 FPS. Intensive games I have not tried: FC2, Assassin's Creed. I don't think HL2 is a good bench, I average 80-100 FPS. Bioshock I get around 40-60 FPS. A GTX260 would do you very, very nicely imo.
