Isn't the board for the 4850 exactly the same as the 4870? Something tells me that it shouldn't be a huge deal for these guys to get 4850x2s going if they're already pumping out 4870x2s.

Except why sell a chip for $449, when you can sell it for $599?

Yep. And if they wind up making more 4870's than they can move, all they have to do is lower the price point so they sell more, which also serves to give their rival an extra kick in the fork.

We all agree they make a better mark up on the 4870, so 4850X2 does not make much business sense for all of them. Maybe one or two of the biggest partner would do it, but even that I have my doubts.

Not everyone who would have purchased a 4850x2 is going to get a 4870x2 instead. Why sell only 120x $600 boards when you can sell 100x $600 boards and 150x $450 boards? You don't increase sales and profits by ignoring entire market segments. Not to mention that whoever does end up producing the only 4850x2s is going to be able name their price (within reason obviously) without the others competing much, if at all.

I must be missing something because I don't think we're going to see any either.

You're missing the price reductions that will follow, pushing the 4870x2 into 4850x2 pricing.

You're missing that 4870x2's are selling like hotcakes. The whole 4-series product line from AMD is selling FANTASTICALLY well.

You're missing that while the price point could be filled, AMD is more than comfortable with 4870 facing that price point product from nVidia...the whole $/perf ratio is missed.

You're missing that this is AMD, not ATI...AMD is missing the whole upper half of CPU pricing, in comparison to Intel...AMD's "extreme" chip costs what? 1/3 of Intels?

The market has changed, and we are just now starting to see the effects. AMD-designed gpus(not ATI-designed gpus) are forthcoming...

You must be also be missing R780.

Our retailer contacts seem to disagree...at least here in Canada. The HD 4870 / 50 are selling very well but the X2 was never a good seller to begin with when compared to the GTX 280 or anyt other card for that matter.

Looks like an early sample of the Sapphire version to me.
