Default ATI 4870x2 or GTX 280 for gaming

Hello
New to the forums. I am currently finishing a 7 month deployment at sea. Looks like I will have a bit of pocket change left over when I get home. I am going to be upgrading computer. Trying to decide which GPU would be better for the new system. I will mostly be using computer for gaming. Which one would be better for my situation? The 4870x2 or the GTX 280.

Mother board will be the ASUS Rampage Extreme. Let me know which direction you folks feel would suit me best.

Hey,

If you want to go for ultimate power, 4870X2 is the card to have. But maybe it could be to much power, in my mind, this is the main questions you need to answer :

What kind of LCD are you powering ?

What cpu will you run ? It seem that theses card can be seriously bottlenecked by the CPU.

Does warrenty and customer service bother you ?

Cannot speak for the ATI Card, however, I am very pleased with my Evga GTX 280. It compliments an OC'd E8400 CPU and 24" LCD nicely.

cndian, please tell us what processor you will have with that motherboard, as well as the monitor you will be using. A 4870x2, like other have mentioned, could be bottlenecked by a slower CPU. Even today's CPUs will have to be overclocked in order to keep up with this card.

Well, I am going to be purchasing a new CPU, motherboard, PSU, etc....
The minimum for a CPU I will go for is the E8600. I am looking hard at one of Intels Quad Cores. My mother board will most likely be the ASUS Rampage Extreme (for the DDR 3 RAM).
My LCD is currently a 22in but looking to get at least a 24in.

Well then I would go for the 4870 X2 as it will be a lot faster then the GTX 280 at that res.

for me it is all about the use you have, I have a GTX260 and it is enough for my 24 inch. But then, if you want the single best. X2 it is.

Don't be fooled, the gains are minimal at best. It isn't quite so "cut n dry", other considerations are heat, noise and cost....do these annoyances justify a few FPS....?....that is what you have to decide!

I just had a look, @ Native Resolution 24" Monitor the 4870x2 gets about 4 FPS more than the GTX280.....on average (Crysis). Anyhow, as I mentioned, their are many factors to consider, better off with 2 x GTX 260 (216) SLI, but your MOBO won't support it? Sorry, I have an Nforce MOBO...

See he is getting a Intel mobo so SLI is not an option. So best bet would be to get the 4870 X2 and if he wants he could go tri fire or quad fire later on.
