the two cards are pretty close in performance while playing games optimised for SLI. remember that the 280 is a single card, where the 9800gx2 is essentially two 9800 gtx 512mb cards in sli. you can run that card in single GPU mode for power savings / folding / multi display or in SLI mode for the best perfomance while gaming though there is NO multi display mode available while in SLI mode.

the 280 is a single card what supports multiple displays while running at peak performance.

the 9800gx2 has 256 shaders, the 280 has only 128 (albiet faster) shader cores. (wich for folding means the 9800gx2 is greater than the 280)

your going to get about the same performance from both, only the things i mentioned already really set them apart (other than the 200 plus bucks you'll save buying the 9800gx2)

Damn, that's a good price for the GX2! How long is it? Is it 10.5in like the 260 and 280?

WOAH! 10.5" long? Thats about 25CM! Crazy.. But if one was to fold, play games, render, and photoshop, would a GX2 be better?

The GX2 kicks ass over ANY graphic card for folding, games about the same as a 280, and i'm not sure if it makes a difference in photoshop, and is likely about the same as anything while rendering. (what are you rendering?)

But from what I've heard, the GX2 microstutters in games. Also, can SLI be enabled on a non SLI board? Like the DS3L? And I usually just render random things that I make.

EDIT: I'm getting a 24" monitor @ 1920x1200. Probably GTX 280 will be best.
Also, what resolution is the OP running at? He might be better off SLIing some 9800GTs, or a single card, depending on his res.

i havnt noticed any microstutters with mine, and you can most definatly run the gx2 in SLI mode on an intel chipset. i was running mine in SLI, on a x48 just yesterday.

I'm not positive, but isnt most rendering done on a CPU anyway? If your talking about 3ds max, im pretty sure its cpu bound while rendoring, though the 1024 megs of Vram helps when you've got alot of textures in the viewport. either the 280 or the gx2 will be ok here, unless your not running in SLI mode with the gx2, then you'll only have 512 mebs of vram, wich is still ok, considering that most workstations graphics cards have 512 or less anyway, and proffessionals use those, so how bad can it be eh?

Be careful, the GX2 have 2x512MB so even if it claim 1 GB, each side doesn't use more than 512MB. A GTX 280 will truly use 1 GB of VRAM and IMHO, it's a better card for your needs. If price is a concern, then a GTX 260 core 216 is a great choice as well (I have the GTX 260 and I love it, currently stepping up to the core 216).

the gx2 while in sli mode (which is the whole point of the card) has the 1 gig of vram available just as the 280 would have it available. so theres really no difference. I've read enough reviews to be able to safely say that in game, there is minimal difference between the two cards, and in some cases the gx2 actually beats it.

I'm not saying the gx2 is better than the 280, but for the price the performance is almost exactly the same, while the gx2 definatly better than the 260.

the fact that the gx2 is 512 x2 and not 1 x 1 gig is not a detriment to the unit.
