I build my PC on my kitchen counter. That or my floor. You dont need to be too carefull. Just mostly careful Lol.

A good place to clip the alligator without grinding it through the paint is a half backed out mounting screw. The screws turn right into bare metal and you are not likely to damage the fit or finish with a alligator clip. It depends on the case but often the easiest is the side panel screws. Take the panel off and mostly turn the screw back into the hole and clip the alligator to that. If the case some with captured screws or thumb screws that are too large to clip on you can back out one of the power supply screws and clip to that.

But, as everyone has said, the static band is overkill. It is really not necessary for home use.
