Default Hard Drive Slowdown w/ TrueCrypt

Hi Guys,

I'm having a problem creating a TrueCrypt volume of only about 4GB on my RAID5 array (specs in my sig). Everything starts out good up until I am 46% done formatting the file container. Up until this point it has been creating the file at a good 80MBps (the capital B is important) and the TrueCrypt process is using a large amount of the processor, but I get no stuttering in other programs, etc... Once it hits 46% my whole computer begins to stutter (even making the post, the it can't keep up with me writing the text, I have to constantly stop) and the write speed goes WAY down to <10MBps and CPU usage ALSO goes down. I have tried doing the same thing with my RAID0 array, but I have no problems with stuttering there. It only happens when I use the RAID5 array for the file container. What the heck could be causing this?

This also happens when I simply copy the file I created on my RAID0 volume to the RAID5 volume, so it's obviously not related to TrueCrypt. Is this due to using onboard RAID? Would a hardware RAID card fix this?

It's possible. RAID 0 does no real calculations. RAID 5 requires the calculation of a parity bit one each write operation. WHile it shouldn't make that much of a hit it will ne slower that using a dedicated RAID card which does the calculatons internally rather than n the CPU.

I was thinking that too, but why is it so fast up until a certain point (using lots of CPU), then slow way down and CPU usage goes to almost nil? Seems a little odd. I ran CHKDSK on my RAID5 array and it found some errors, so I'll give it a try a little later. Right now I'm just defragging the array with O&O Defrag, which may take a while considering it's 80% full of DVD ISOs, large games, TV shows, etc...
