My System Specs

Default Athlon 64 x2 5600 (Windsor) runs HOT and fan goes crazy !

I just installed my 2 recently purchased Athlon 64 x2 5600+ processors, Windsor F3 / 2.8Ghz / 2MB L2 cache (lucky me for getting those while supplies are limited)

Previously I was using an Athlon 64 x2 4600+ and it was running fine.

After I installed both my processors there is something that concerns me and puzzles me at the same time. The CPU runs very hot and fan speeds very quickly.

When I install windows, it's not bad the cores will idle in the 40's, and in the 30's when using C&C. God forbid if I dare run something that puts both my cores at 100% - CPU temp (meaning the CPU's outer shell) can range 60~66C, while the internal core #1 is 55C and #2 somewhere around 55~57 no more. My internal cores have NEVER exceeded 60C, however the CPU's internal HS, up to 66C. Now when this happens the fan starts spinning like crazy - going up to 6000 RPM and making the noise of a 747 ! This CAN't be healthy for the FAN, I'm sure the FAN is probably designed to run @ no more than 4000RPM, but I can't ******* believe that if I am to run a 3D rendering app or pay a game that my CPU fan would run that fast. The moment I stop the full load app the temps sky dive back to 55 then in the 40's. - There is a huge gap between CPU temp and the CPUcore#1 and #2 - whcih tells me that the cpu's cover gets damn hot. Both my PC cases have 2 fans exhausts pushing air out - I tried shutting those off, same thing, never had any issues with previous CPUs. Now I was thinking bad thermal contact with HS and CPU, but I've done this for many years, since the 386 - I applied the HSF properly, they are well aligned and well latched and locked into place - and yes I took off the sticker under the HSF - BOTH CPUs I have, identical, do the same thing. Now my CPU Cores are well within tolerence levels, I believe the 5600 X2's max temp is around 62C if not mistaken, so both cores are ok, but it's the CPU housing that is exceeding specs - and I know that the specs concern the CPU as a whole, so if your cores are fine but your CPU's outer shell is not, then it takes priorirty. If I just leave my CPU fan run at 6000RPM is it dangerous for the FAN can it handle that speed - When the FAN runs at that speed the temps don't get any lower.

get an aftermarket heatsink like the arctic cooiling freezer 64 pro, they will drop your temp in the 40's and its only 17$

those 5600+ run quite hot and they need a good heatsink

I second the Freezer, its cheap and works great. Plus it is very silent.
