2.6 stable is not too bad for that chip. I really didn't notice much difference performance- wise when I moved from 2.6 to 2.8 with my old opty with an 8800GTX. The big jump I saw was up and over 2.2-2.4. As said though if you start going past DDR400 with that mem it could well be your limiting factor.
