Do you know where that Realtemp thread is, by any chance? I've never been able to locate it myself, and I'd like to get to know a bit of the groundwork behind it.

Real Temp - New temp program for Intel Core processors - XtremeSystems Forums Its under Hardware > Intel And to the OP, the difference between RealTemp and CoreTemp for me is 10C (CoreTemp being +10C of RealTemp). I just take the highest number as to me that's safer. This is more due to the fact that people are unsure of the Tj Max of the 45nm quads.

Update your coretemp to the latest version 0.99. It gives you an option to display the temperature as "delta to Tjunction max", which is the raw data from the sensor. As Intel doesn't publish what Tjunction max is, it's hard for any program to accurately tell you exactly what your temps are. They are all best guess approximations from the individual programmers. Changing it to display the delta value gives you the headroom you have to the max operating temp of your chip, regardless of stepping or manufacturing process. What do I use? I generally use coretemp and hwmonitor, and assume the worst case scenario. But I'm kinda chicken. And would be even more tentative if I'd spent $1200 on a QX9650. ![]() Edit: Also, Realtemp's programmer says that the delta Tjunction max number reported by the CPU's are non-linear the farther away from Tjunction max the temp actually is, according to his testing. i.e. the difference between 64 and 65 reported may actually be .7 celsius, while the difference between 4 and 5 is actually 1 degree.

Ok, Thank you all for your replies. Btw, I found out that in realtemp v.2.60, I could manually set the tjmax to the same value as coretemp i.e 100. That gave me the same readings as coretemp...these are idle temps by the way.

I highly recommend this post as well. It may sound complicated but once you read it a few times it'll sink in. I use Real Temp exclusively but I do like to double check in other programs as well; just for safe measure. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/22...perature-guide

Hmm... interesting groundwork and theory behind Realtemp, but I don't think I'm entirely sold on the practical methodology behind it. Some assumptions are being made that I'm not entirely comfortable with. So, Coretemp for the time being. It'll be interesting to see how Nehalem operates in this department.

I don't want to hijack this thread but I thought it would be a good place to ask. I just put my system together and installed Coretemp and I'm finding that the temperatures are all over the place. One second it will be 30 and the next it will be 42, and then back down to 30. With everything in between of course. Should I change the default refresh rate or something? Also, a what point would people consider re-mounting the CPU cooler (discrepencies between cores)? If it helps I'm using a Scythe Katana 2 and a Q6600 on a Gigabyte DS4. Edit: Was the Scythe a bad purchase? I don't plan to overclock much past 3.0
