Default Problems with my system

Hey everyone

OK so Today I got my new E8400, Now I did have a E6550 which Oced real well had it running at 3.5GHz.
Ok so here is my problem, I installed my new E8400 and tried OCing it, well I would get the blue screen of death.
now when I reset my E8400 down to about 3.8GHz or less I do not get issues, but yet
I did not think the CPU would give you the blue screen of DEATH.
Does this make sense to anyone.
Do I have not a good cpu, or is it my hard drive thats doing it.
whats the Voltage max on this cpu. maybe i should up it more, but worried about to much going to it
I gave it 1.35V does it need more.
Oh yeah running windows Vista Ultimate 32bit

So I hope some one here can help me out, since your all better at this then I'm.
OH yeah one more thing in this pic my speeds are different
why

Well, to start, Orthos is pretty strange for detecting CPU speed. With my Q6600, I remember it telling me that I was running at 277FSB x 13 multi (I wish). In your case, it's probably detecting your FSB correctly, but assuming you're running at max multi (9x440 = 3960). Or something like that. I've heard all kinds of weird stuff concerning Orthos and the Core 2 chips. Whatever the case, don't worry about it.

As for the BSOD, you can definitely get those from CPU testing at higher frequencies. My own 45nm processor will consistently crash and reboot whenever a stress-test fails at higher frequencies. It's annoying, but I'm fairly certain it doesn't mean anything serious. At a certain point, you're probably more likely to get a system crashing error than a simple calculation error that the program gets a chance to report.

As for your frequencies, have you verified that the FSB is stable? That is, do you know whether it's the CPU frequency or the FSB frequency that is causing problems? Or for that matter, do you know that the memory can support whatever speed you have it set at?

If you haven't already, drop your memory speed to below its rated speed, in order ensure stability. Drop your CPU multiplier to 6 and first determine a range of stable FSB frequencies. I've seen plenty of reports suggesting that a P35 chipset can push a dual-core chip past 500FSB, but that doesn't mean there might not be FSB holes along the way. If 440 MHz is stable, but 445 isn't, try jumping up to 460 or 470 and see if things are better. Various BIOS adjustments might be necessary to make them stable, of course. Experiment with them a little, and once you have a range of FSB frequencies that you know are stable, you can bump up the CPU multiplier and use that range for overclocking. That way, when you get a crash, you can be reasonably certain that the problem is the CPU, not any other component.

As for your voltage, I think I'd expect 1.35V to carry a 45nm dual-core a little higher than that, but can't say for sure. Maybe someone else here can offer experience on that point?

My system runs at 9x445 24/7, but needs 1.32V reported in CPU-Z. You're at 1.264. Try raising your Vcore a bit, and put your multi at 9. You should be close to 4.0 at that point.

Also, my system needed bumping on NB voltage to keep it stable.

Good luck.

Well I do not understand why its reading 1.26V when I put in 1.35V in my Bois.
Its almost like cpuz is not reading my speed and voltage right
when I ran 3D06 on the results it told me my processor was running @ 3.96GHZ
but cpuz told me it was 3.5GHz
I looked in my computers vista properties and here is what it show

YZFRaven is my other call sign, so here it shows me 3.96 which othros has the same.
so is cpuz wrong?
which one do I trust..

Trust the one that's giving you the reading of what you've got set in bios. Many of the programs (3DMark for sure) don't recognise that you've dropped your multiplier and only use the stock multi X FSB to get the figure they're listing.

Unfortunately that might be pushing your memory out of it's range.

That's the problem with the higher FSB processors... your mem goes out of range quicker due to higher FSB.

OK so now I have found why, I think I have.
Othros and 3dmark are reading my settings in bois i had before that would fail.
and that cpuz is reading the correct one.
So sswilson, I was running a E6550 and had that OCed to 3.5GHz on 500MHz FSB
ram was running at 1000 i think
here is my E6550 pic

so the E8400 has a higher FSB then my E6550, sorry I thought they had the same.
now i feel dumb

CPU-Z is most likely the correct number. But you can check it with HWmonitor (CPUID) or Everest as well. You're experiencing vDrop and vDroop which are both very common. vDrop is the difference between Bios Setting and idle vCore. vDroop is the difference between idle and load vCores. As your system draws more power the voltage tends to drop a little.

OK so on everest it shows it reading the same as cpuz. hmm so I think I need to upgrade my memory, and get DDR2 8500
that should be able to boost the performance more.
You guys been a great help, still wonder if I could go higher on my memory that i have now.
Should I just buy new memory and a new mobo X38 maybe or higher end P35..
my excise to buy new hardware.
whats the max temps on the E8400 and voltage
