Default "Spare Parts" machine CPU fan speed issues

Hi all,

So a bit of an odd problem with a machine I'm putting together from spare parts for my nephews.

It's an old Core2Quad Q6700 on an Asus P5KPL-CM with 4GB of DDR2 and a 460.

Certainly old but sufficient for homework and older games.

The issue I'm running into is that the Q-Fan control is simply not working at all. The fans stay at idle speeds no matter the temp, and the CPU clocks down as soon as it hits 70c as reported by HWMonitor.

Obviously I can run the fan at full blast or put a non-stock cooler on it with a quiet fan (which I might yet do) but I'd rather not.

Any suggestions? I'm not overclocked, the BIOS settings are largely default, and Q-Fan is enabled.

Notua 3 pin fans come with a resistor to drop fan speed some

possible the PWM is dead

try another known good 4 wire fan ON CPU FAN HEADER while using CHA-FAN to power current mounted cpu fan to see if its the motherboard issue or fan

or the CPU thermistor is gone on MB

Make sure something is plugged into cpu header or it may not post.

Are there any kind of sub menus for the q-fan control? It sounds like you're on "ultra silent" mode or something like that.

FYI this is a stock Intel CPU fan at the moment.

I've got the Q-Fan configuration set to Performance, but the only way I've found so far to get the speed to come up is to disable Q-Fan - which makes the stock Intel cooler sound like a banshee at 3800 rpm.

It is possible the PWM is dead, but not sure. I can try Speedfan to see if it can control it - the other option might be to grab my spare Hyper 212 and just put a quiet fan on it and call it a day.

So it turns out I have a second P5KPL-CM hanging around.

I swapped it in, and no difference.

Also swapped to a Hyper 212 and no luck there either.

At this point I think I'm down to:

- Bad CPU (This was a CPU I had overclocked before to around 3.15 Ghz a while back)
- Windows 10 driver issues
- Bad PWM headers on this model of motherboard
- Some kind of issue/incompatibility with these boards and either the Q6700 or other hardware

The Hyper 212 isn't terribly loud even at full blast, so for now I've just disabled Q-Fan and it's running fine otherwise, with the added benefit of the temps topping out around 50c.

This is going to my wife's nephews (8 and 10) to type up homework and play Lego PC games, essentially, so I'm sure they'll be happy with it and a little bit of fan noise isn't going to bother them.

Thanks for the suggestions!
