Default Steelseries microphone not working

Hi :)

I have the Steelseries Siberia V2 Frost Blue headphones, it seems that when my extender is plugged in, which actually enables me to sit back in my chair, the microphone will occasionally mess up and the only thing my friends can hear on Skype is static which repeatably gets louder. It goes away if I turn the headphones off and on but inevitably comes back.
I removed the extender and the microphone seems fine but it means I can't sit back, is the extender defective?

My System Specs

I had a set of steelseries a few years ago.. the little dongle with the volume control and mic on/off switch was the culprit. Cheaply made IMO.
