Default weird USB problems

I've been having some weird problems with my USB devices on my computer.

Every once and a while it seems like all my devices just turn off. lights go out on my keyboard and mouse and I have to reboot. they all work fine on reboot though. this could be when I'm doing anything from surfing the net to gaming. it doesn't happen very often but it's quite irritating.

What happens more often is if I'm transfering a large amount of data to a USB key (patriot xporter XT 32GB) the transfer will crap out part of the way through, my usb devices will all shut down and my speakers will emit a "guuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh" noise.

my motherboard is a Rampage II extreme, so it's getting older. keyboard is a razer lycosa and mouse is a razer mamba used wired.

any ideas?

thanks,

we've got hardwood floors. my chair sits on a little 2' circle carpet to protect the floor. no humidifier, and I'm in edmonton so the air is pretty dry.
