Default USB ports acting funny

Today or a few days ago my USB ports have been acting funny. This morning when I turned on my webcam, the maximum image I was able to get was 160x120 because there is a bandwidth (or speed problem with my USB port), so I proceeded to make the switch to another port and it fixed the problem.

However, tonight, I got another message saying something along the lines of "This device could run faster", I turned on my webcam just to see and it was back at 160x120. Its locked there, as in no other options. Nothing has changed in my settings, I still have the same number of devices plugged, the webcam is plugged directly into the mobo in the back.

In my day to day usage, I probably do not notice the difference. However, maybe I get more lag with my mice or keyboards.

USB ports wear out alla time man. If you commonly plug things in and out and sometimes zap the ports with static they'll eventually screw up or stop working.

Did you try reloading your motherboard drivers (or just the chipset ones?) or removing your usb hub from device manager and allowing it to be picked up again?

I unplug things from my USB ports about once a year for cleanup.

I haven't reloaded my mobo's drivers or anything, but I will try that tomorrow.

I bought a fancy new furnace humidifier to do battle with static!

I get that problem when I overload the usb with power usage: (USB speakers). I added a POWERED USB hub and that solved everything). Under $10.

If you think your USB is acting up. You might want to try some diagnostic software such as USBDeview. You can see what drivers are being loaded and what's being polled from the registry. Too many instances of the same driver can sometimes make things go a bit haywire.

As long as you're not over drawing the port or have physically cracked the port it should be fixable as most motherboards have diodes to prevent static damage.
