My System Specs

Default Whats going on here...

I have RMA'd 2 XFX 7970's int the past 6 months, first one the found issues and the second there was no issues they could find. The first card had tearing artifacting and no stability at stock settings, second card had mild tearing and no stabilty at stock settins. Now i have a 3rd card from XFX that is acting up. My first card or rather the one i purchased was a XFX 7970 DD Edition , and the second one received was the same model. The third one appears to be a Black Edition made in 2011, and at stock clocks the driver crashes in any game i run. I underclocked it at 950 (stock clock is 1ghz) and up the power limit to 20% it runs fine. All the temps are golden with ambient room temp @ 28 C max card temps at 100% was 78 C. My concern is either this card is buggered or its my PSU, it has 2 12 v rails at 25 amps each rail, max wattage 700. Can you guys confirm my thought and make my life a little less stressful? As it stands if its my PSU I'll grab a Corsair HX750 for 150 bucks, or if its the video card.....Rma yet again and just craigslist it and buy a 770 or 780 which is $$$.

the psu could be flakey. OCZ's psu are not held in particular high regard around here. I really couldn't say 100% that a new psu will solve your problems, but how many gpu connectors does it have on it? 4 I should think. try running the 7970 off two cables from one rail. Try the other two cables from the other rail. See if one of the 12V rails is bad.

could also try enabling vsync in game

First thing I'd do (and have done with the previous cards) is to try them in another system. If they work fine there but not in yours then the problem may not be the video card. The next alternative if possible is to try a similar model from a different manufacturer and see if the problem reoccurs. If it does then again, it's not the video card.If they still misbehave, it may be a heat issue with poor thermal contact to the GPU. That said, it points to poor quality control and an alternative brand choice might be in order.

Because it runs fine with a slight underclock and voltage bump you know its either power supply or graphics card (that eliminates driver/software issues). The best thing to try would be to either find someone that can loan you a power supply to try, or let you run your 7970 in their rig. If you can do one of those you can determine once and for all if its a bad PSU, or just really bad luck on graphics cards.

PSU isn't what it states on 12v rail 46A (Combined)

so in real world gpu getting 23amps when card needs 58amps

  • 80 PLUS Certified means zero with
    OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W

try a real PSU SS-1050MX with real ampereage 87 true amps on 12v rail

either way I'm buying a better PSU, my second system is powered by a 5 yr old ultra PSU...sooo....yah might not work. I'll ask a buddy of mine to "burrow" his system for a day. BTW I ran Furmark for 4 hours at stock clocks no issues, even spent half a day benching with no issues, only borks in games.

thats what i was thinking as well kapt, jus needed the wisdom of you folks XD, so in short new PSU Corsair TX850 is what I'm leaning toward and trouble shooting the 7970. I'm hoping to keep the black edition as it is the older model...I dont think its voltage locked

It's definitely going to be a good call to go for the new psu anyway. Hopefully it will resolve your issues. You could easily go to the 750w model if you want to save a few $. I would only opt for the 850w if you think you may add a second 7970 at some point.

Thats the plan hopefully, since 13.8 has resolved some of the stutter issues with CF
