You'll have to do a visual check. You can also (very carefully) apply light pressure to the center of the individual fans with the erasure end of a pencil to get an idea of the kind of torque they're putting out. (I use my finger..... :-) )
The software rpm only reports one of the two fans.

Here are some pictures I took when I reapplied my thermal paste.

Edit: It's past 3am here, so I'll have to sleep. Thanks for your help and more suggestions are welcome.

Personally, if it were me and I wanted to continue using the card I'd probably just pick up one of the Arctic Cooling third party GFX coolers.

Yeah, but the MSI GTX 580 Lightning is non-reference, so it can't be changed. (And I'm not going to mod, because it's too risky with money and I have no skills)

Edit: sent arctic a mail and see what they say if it will fit or not fit.

Ahhhhh.... maybe try MSI to see if they'll sell you a replacement TF cooler for it (assuming it's out of warranty).

So did replacing the thermal paste work? I was thinking that it might be a case of dried out paste.

Since I would then not be able to re-use the cooler, it's maybe a loss when I buy a new card. The arctic I could use on my *gtx 880* so to speak and the tf just for this.

It didn't work, it dropped a degree or two.
