My System Specs

Default Can't delete file

Hey, I was messing around with VLC and wanted to convert a video file from MP4 to WMV. As I hit the start button the program seemed to do it's thing but I accidentally closed the program mid encode. Now I'm stuck with it on the desktop. It just sits there pretending to gather info but not actually deleting it.

Any idea how I can nuke this file?

Safe mode? (Assuming you're running Windows)

well look in your task ,manager and first see if VLC is still running the the back ground if it is right click and end task if it isn't then see how many explorers are running then go to the file try to delete it and if it gets that pop up saying that it cannot delete the file don't close the pop up but look in the task manager and right click, the end task all explorers that you see, go back to the pop up and try again after it deletes the file in the task manager go to file , new task in that window type in explorer which will bring up your tass bar again. that usually works for me.
let us know if it works

A Linux live disc should do the trick as well.

Next time it happens - and it will happen again :P - use File Assassin. Malwarebytes : Remove any locked file with FileASSASSIN

That has yet to let me down. Worse case scenario...you reboot and it kills it on windows startup. ;)

Really? I never would have thought of that.... ;)

Thanks for the link, I had a quick look over at majorgeeks for a similar program but much prefer a trusted source like the folks over at Malwarebytes,

I've used MajorGeeks for years. No problem. And yes, nuking system files can be bad for the OS.

It wasn't MG I was concerned about, it was the fact that the only program I came up with on a quick search was pretty old and only had around 40 votes...... ;)
