You have 1 of 2 things generally going on with this.. an update was installed that has possibly caused an issue or your hard drive is starting to fail.
Being that its 5 years I would wager your hard drive is getting tired.
Find the brand of it and run the manufacturers tools on it or download UBCD or Hirens and run the utils from that cd.
Don't even bother with any other troubleshooting till you've ran tests on the hard drive.
