My System Specs

Default Swap hdd from one laptop to another

Need some advise...

My niece has a Toshiba Satellite L350D that I believe has a dead MB.

-Screen is completely black
-External screen doen't work (FN+F5)
-When plugged on my home network I get nothing.
-Only the fan comes on at startup and that's all.

So I want to put her hdd in my laptop to hopefully retrieve her college files and pictures.
My question is, is this safe to do ?? she has vista and I have W7, not sure if it matters.
Just want to be certain I won't mess up my laptop.

The only issue I really see happening is because the drivers are going to be different you might a BSOD or two on bootup.
That being said if you have a desktop you can plug it in a different SATA port and pull it off that way.

Never took a laptop apart, didn't realize they had the same SATA connector.

This is great, will try that.

No worries, most Laptop HDD's are just 2.5" versions of there bigger brothers (unless its a rare one with an mSATA SSD).

Hopefully that will work for you :)

You desktop should still default to your primary OS. You may get a prompt when loading about selecting the OS to use (When your computer detects 2 , doesn't happen all the time). Pick your primary and keep going.

Same thing happend tomy laptop half a year ago. What I did was I had the hdd removed from the laptop and placed in an enclosure which meant that I could get to all my files and thus I also got an external hard drive.

What I had to do to access the laptop hd when connected to my desktop was go to device manager, left click the laptop drive and click scan for hardware changes

Yesssssss !!!
It worked, I'm now her favorite uncle by far...

This was super simple. After boot-up her drive simply showed as another drive (G, I think it was) and from there transfer was a joke.

Thanks for your help ST and the others.
