if you have more then one stick of ram pull all of them and the put one stick in and try that if your PC fires up I would then use ram test to test out your ram.

Not a dumb question at all. I was just about to ask it when I saw the OP. :)

What is your mobo? I have theAsus MaximusV,and had similar boot issues. I was told to try another keyboard, and believe it or not,it worked. I don't know how, what or why it worked, but it did.

For some reason the Alienware keyboard didn't play nice with the Maximus V's boot sequence and forced it into the bios every time during power up.

Wondering if a pin or 2 is just out of position enough (in the cpu socket) that when remounting the heat sink....it moved the cpu just enough to not make a good connection.

I've seen it happen with one of my MB when swapping out CPU's. There is virtually no movement in those cpu sockets. Yet when I pushed on the cpu and gave it a twist left and right (wiggled it..I guess)...system booted up (after putting HS back on as well....or course).
