Default trying to update my SSD firmware problem

For a long time I have been trying to update my firmware on my Intel 510 SSD but when I do my SSD isn't seen, so if I disconnect all of the other Harddrives and just have my SSD and my DVD drive running the SSD will always boot even is I set the DVD drive to boot first or I press the F8 option to bootit will not boot I am not sure if that is because the SSD drive is faster or what.
It is frustrating because if I connect all of the hard drives with the SSD and the DVD drive the DVD will boot but the firmware update won't see my SSD drive

Haven't owned an Intel SSD, but isn't it possible to update the firmware via the Intel SSD Toolbox?

Is AHCI enabled in BIOS? Password protection?
You may need to burn the ISO again, whatever you do back up first before updating the firmware.
Did you create the bootable ISO with Intel's Firmware Update Tool, or another utility?
Last but not least, why can't you download the Toolbox?

Have you tried a different sata port on your motherboard for the ssd? Also check to see that the ssd and dvd drive are on sata ports using the same controller. Some boards have a couple sata ports running on a secondary controller (marvell or jmicron or something?)

edit:
According to ASUS for 990FX boards:
Quote:
StorageAMD SB950 controller :
6 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), brown
Support Raid 0, 1, 5, 10
JMicron® JMB362 controller :
2 x SATA 3Gb/s port(s), black
1 x Power eSATA 3Gb/s port(s), green
1 x eSATA 3Gb/s port(s), red

Pull the drive and try it on a different system. AMD + SSDs are not always an optimal combination....and can cause some wonky issues from time to time.
