Default New Computer Lag Issues

Hey everyone. I recently purchased a new computer and built it myself. Everything runs great except that from time to time, probably about every 15 minutes or so. Everything lags for about 5 seconds and then goes back to normal. By everything, I mean video, cursor movement, audio etc. Anyone have any ideas what the issue might be?

I've already updated all the drivers, as far as I can tell.

Here are my specs.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - 64 bit
ACPI x64-based PC
AMD FX(tm)-8120 eight-core processor 3.10 GHz
8 gigs of ram
Nvidia GeForce GTS450 video card
30 gig solid state corsair hard drive
1 TB 5600 rpm seagate hard drive

Thank you!

Make sure the HSF is securely installed on top of the chip. How's the temps like when this lag happens?

is something updating in the background like antivirus? I would reboot into safe mode ( which only runs the minimal windows . then try to see if you can cause the same problem if it still happens then test your Memory if it doesn't then most likely it is a software issue like something updating in the back ground

Alright, I'll try safe mode. The temperature, fan and heat sink are fine. I had memory express mount the CPU. Nothing updating in the background. This has been happening for a few weeks. How would you recommend I test the memory?

Got it all figured out. Thanks for the help. I did some research and also ran in Safe Mode as you mentioned. No issues in safe mode. So, it seems that McAfee anti-virus was causing my issues. I've uninstalled it and replaced it with a different anti-virus. No more issues.

Thanks again.

Heh the ever popular AV/system protector dragging my system down issue. You're not the first and you won't be the last. Worst I've seen was an older version of Norton System commander which was for some reason keeping the HDD running 24/7. Ran the norton removal tool and it was like a brand new system. :)

Glad to hear you found the issue fairly quickly, what AV did you decide to go with?

I just put Windows Protector on there for now. I may try something like Webroot, I've been pretty happy with that in the past.

I hope you mean windows defender and/or Microsoft Security Essentials. Quick google search (well... duck duck go search... ;) ) suggests that products with Windows and Protector in the name are rogue AV (malware).
