Default Possible video card failing or just loose?

Situation:

System three days in a row refuses initial boot with a POST beep code of 1 long/2 short (twice) and 1 long/3 short (once). This is supposed to indicate a failed video card/video card memory.

Only after a bit of coaxing and reseating the card, the system has booted fine the last two days. It has however spontaneously rebooted a couple of times (screen goes black, drive activity, POST beep and reboot) and is fine thereafter.

The card was originally firmly seated before I reseated it so I'm not really sure that is the issue. However I've never seen a video card that failed enough to generate a POST failure alarm and yet still be coaxed to reliably boot thereafter - by the time the POST fail they're usually gone.

heat would not seem to be an issue either as despite a high ambient lately (24-28C), system temps have not topped 45C and video card temps have been below 50C

Opinions welcome.

Slot appears to be fine. I should say the system is three years old and has functioned without hardware issue till now.

ASUS P53 Motherboard, ATI HD4870 video card.

Nothing has changed hardware wise? I had similar issues with my tech station / lian li modded bench, occasionally the card would work itself out of proper contact but firmly reseating it would resolve the issue. There isn't a secondary card close by that might be affecting the case is there?

No. Nothing has changed. The alst change was a few months ago when a wirelss card was added to the PCIe1x slot next to the back of teh videoc ard. It's no where enar touching and is tiny enough not to interfere with cooling and there have been no problems until last week. The closest possible culprit is a Corsair RAM fan that (fr my taste) sits uncomfortably close to the back of the video card though does not touch it. Again though, that ahs been there for some time.

In my case it wasn't that the other card was touching the vid card, it was that the other card wasn't mating correctly with the case and the slight warping of the rear panel that this caused was putting a slight upwards pressure on the vid card's bracket.

I'll check that out though the card does seem to be securely seated. System booted fine today but after about 15 minutes, screen went black for about 5-10 seconds and then the system rebooted itself.

Have you tried reinstall the drivers? I had a similar problem with my ati 3450, after a new install of video codec, it made the system unstable, after reinstall of 10.3 drivers all is golden now.

I would try driver 10.5a for your 4870.

It was running along fine on the last Catalyst 12.4 so it's been a bit since they were upgraded. I've tried the Catalyst 12.6 and they seem stable as well.
