Default New System locks up randomly

Hey everyone,

Before I begin these are my system specs:

Intel Core i5 2500K (no OC)
Asus p8p67 pro rev3.0 B3 (newest BIOS)
Asus Radeon HD 6950 DCII 2GB (no OC)
2x G-Skill 4GB F3-10666CL9-4GBRL (not OC)
Corsair HX850w PSU (originally OCZ z-series 850w)
OCZ Agility 3 120GB SSD (primary OS)
WD Caviar Black 1TB (games/apps/storage)

I've been having issues with my new rig since I built it. This happens mostly while gaming but sometimes while I'm just surfing or watching videos.

While gaming the system will just lock up, no BSOD. The screen will just freeze. keyboard/mouse does not respond. the only way to temporarily resolve this is to hardboot the computer. One thing I've noticed is that any USB device I have plugged in will instantly lose power when this happens. My headphones if connected with a 3.5mm will just start buzzing.

The case fans stay powered, my video card cards fans stay powered, I can feel the hard drive spinning as well.

What I've tried:
  • monitor temps, GPU doesn't get above 80, CPU will be around 60 while gaming.
  • Memtext86+ ran overnight, 10+ passes with no issues
  • Furmark ran for several hours, no lock ups, GPU max temp was 86 degrees
  • Swapped PSU from original OCZ to Corsair HX
  • Swapped video card with friend
  • Tried video card on another PCI-e slot
  • Reinstalled windows/updated drivers (originally only had WD drive as primary, bought SSD which now has OS on it, issue still occurring with OS on a different drive.

A question I had was if my WD drive is bad, (even though the OS is not on it, the games and programs I'm using are on it) can that cause my computer to hard lock?

I haven't tried stressing my drives yet because I figured it's happening with my OS on two different drives, I can totally be incorrect though.

Another idea I had was (anybody who owns the Asus DCII 6950 will understand) my video card is so big and heavy that when it is in the PCI-e slot, the back end sags down and almost rests on the p67 chipset heat sink. I'm thinking it could possibly be overheating the chipset, but I have tied up the card so it does not sag and touch the heatsink, I've also moved the card to a different PCI-e slot so it's not touching at all.

If anybody can spare a thought or give me another idea or test to try I would be really thankful and appreciate the help.

Sorry but the system isn't giving a BSOD, I'm not worried about upping my ram frequency at the moment, I'd like to resolve the random lock ups first.

Thanks

My System Specs

Is it stable in safe mode? Try installing ubuntu using wubi - see if you have the same issues. Just shots in the dark really.
