Why does my HDMI not look as good as DVI?

I always have used DVI cable from my PC to my 27" TV\ monitor, I decided to try HDMI cable instead just to see the difference, well there is a fairly big different the HDMI just doesn't look right , the blacks are black and the colours seem proper but the desktop icons look like they are 16 bit or something like that, the resolution is 1920x 1080 and is set to 32 bit so that isn't the issue, it is seems like the whites are a little brighter or something. if I watch a video off of my PC it looks great but that's about it.
When I first hooked it up my task bar was barely visible so I rebooted then played around with different resolutions then came back to the 1920x1080 which seemed to fox the taskbar but the icons and even this web browser looks not to good.
