need help seperating the 2 pushpin parts without breaking them

I'm having problems removing the pushpins from the Scythe Ninja rev.b LGA 775 retention system so I can use the Thermalright bolt-through kit with it. I've tried yanking on them real hard but they won't budge. Is there some trick to separating the 2 parts?

I can try to use excessive force but I'm afraid of bending the metal or just breaking the plastic pushpins. I want to get rid of them but still save them. If this is impossible I guess I'll have to cut through the plastic, but I'd really rather avoid that. Any help is appreciated.

If they are the same as the stock Intel pins, you have to turn them sideways to unlock them.
