Default System won't boot with 2nd GPU powered, OK to run unpowered (disabled) temporarily?

Hi guys,

So I recently installed water blocks on a pair of EVGA 470s (first time adventure).

Long and short of it, the primary one boots with power, the other one does not (but I can boot the system if I don't power the 2nd GPU).

The 2nd card might be kaput, it's quiet possible I messed up the block installation and potentially fried it forever by shorting it.

So right now I'm running GPU1 powered up and running and GPU2 powered down (no 2x 6pin power). Is it OK to run like this until I can drain the loop and explore damage to the second card? Seems like any damage would be done already, I just want to makes sure I can't cause to other components (or even risk GPU2 if there is a chance it can be salvaged).

maybe try and switch the cards around to see if the second card is working , which PSU are you using?

I'm using a Silverstone Strider 1000w modular.

I probably should have provided more details. The system with all components was working just in an air cool setup, and I finally switched over to water cool setup over the weekend and now the system won't boot if the 2nd GPU has power.

Ultimately I plan to do what you suggest, swap them and see if the magic happens (although I'll probably re-install the GPU water block on GPU2 to prevent an additional tear down of the Water cool loop).

I'm mostly looking for some validation that if GPU2 doesn't have power (except maybe what it gets from the PCI-E slot, if any?) it no further harm (since it could already be dead) can be done to it, or other components, by running the rest of the system (that's 2x GPUs socketed, only 1 GPU functional).

What's in the box?

Intel 2500k
2x EVGA Nvidia Geforce 470 GTX
Gigabyte Z68X-UD5-B3
Crucial M4 SSD 120GB
Silverstone Strider 1000W PSU
16GB Kingston HyperX

Water: EK Acetal / Nickel combos for CPU/GPUs, XSPC 360 rad, Laing D5 Pump an an EK 250mm Adv. Res.

if still no work remove WB and inspect for shorts

I've taken the waterblock off and replaced with the stock cooler, same issue.

Unless someone has some suggestions on how to further troubleshoot / repair I think I have to consider the card dead.

Well, it worked with the cooler EVGA put on it until I removed it...

So sadly, I'm not sure RMA is an option, I'm pretty sure it's my fault. No?

Yeah, if it worked with the stock cooler and not your waterblock, they it was most likely your fault. Pretty sure your evga warranty doesn't cover you after removing any of the casing.

Now is the time to wish you bought XFX? heh...
