hmmm I just noticed looking in the nvidia control panel, and under Help-System information, and go to the bottom of that, BUS - PCI Express X1 Gen 2?!!

Should that not be showing at X16

some issue between the motherboard and GTX 295 be cutting the bus speed to 1X?

What does it say when you've got the 260 installed?

I can certainly see the dual-GPU solution being more significantly hampered by the x1 bandwidth than a single-chip solution, but you'd expect some of the same issues to appear -- unless perhaps the lack of bandwidth is actually causing you to lose frames.

Tom's did a comparison of the effects of x1, x4, x8, and x16 a few years back, but I've never seen a comparison run using dual-GPU cards. Might have to go looking now that you've got me curious.

Somewhat newer PCI-e article, which touches on dual-GPU issues by commenting on SLI setups: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...x4,2696-9.html

Evidently you're not the only person to experience this issue of PCI-e x1 on a GTX 295. I'd also check to what your BIOS has your video adapter connection set, per KaptKrunch.

One thread I've read turned out to be compatibility issues between motherboard and the GTX 295 (mobo was a Greek HP IPIBL-LB). Is the card new to your system?

Later today Im going to install the GTX 260 again and see what it says,

however I will say both the GTX 260 and 4870 I tried installing both seemed to run flawless when installed. The GTX 295 was new to the system yes, but the first card to be installed on a fresh install of the OS, with applicable drivers.

thx, I'll keep posted

Try swapping the psu if possible. I recently had an issue too, where my psu died on me, when I was running two 470's in sli. If it works great when you run the 260, then it should run greater when you are using 295.

Well, I tried the set up with a 1000watt PSU, and still runs the same, I tried downgrading the BIOS on the X38 motherboard to see if maybe it was a bios issue, the BIOS I tried did the same thing. Seems like an issue between the motherboard and GTX 295?!

OK, I set up the GTX 295 on a M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 board, and it runs flawless with the 750 watt power supply mentioned above. For some reason though it did not want to run well with the X38 LGA 775 board, and it didn't want to run at all with a P5Q Deluxe P45 motherboard.

It has run good with a X58 P6T Deluxe, and the above mentioned board. AM3 and intel set up.

I guess for the heck of it I could see if it will work with a 780i board I have kicking around. But ah well.

I just dont understand why it doesn't run with the X38 board, if there is some setting in the BIOS that I dont understand.

thanks all for your inputs
