Default WTH is wrong with Win7's Search?

I know the filename exists in SEVERAL places on the drive I'm searching, but it's not finding them

is it a new file? windows has to cache it before you can search for it

I'm trying to find and replace all the copies of an old file which would have been on the machine since Win7 was installed and replace it with a new one, the file itself is just a 24 byte string of numbers.

I've renamed all the copies of the file I've found but yet another program which uses this file is still successfully running so there's still one hiding somewhere

I'm gonna try rebuilding the index and see if that works.

Add * to the front back and back of the search. It should find your file then.

I had the same issue.

To work around it I open windows explorer, Click Tools > Folder Options > "Always search file names and contents..." > OK. Close the windows.

Now browse to the drive you want to search, in the address bar, change C:\ (or whatever drive) to \\localhost\c$ and type your search.

Weird thing is it finds the file on networked drives when I seach the whole PC, but not the local drives. I wonder if the fact it's buried in a cygwin folder has anything to do with it...
