My System Specs

Default Rookie building question

So I know I sound like a true rookie but when I do I test boot outside of the case to make sure the system posts, how exactly do I turn off the system? Just pull the plug and if so when? I'm about to start my first build and I don't want to screw anything up!

If your board has a power button on it, hold it for 4 seconds and the system will power down. Otherwise you can turn off the power supply.

As for when? When it has posted and gives you a boot failure error because you don't have an OS installed.

usually i use a screwdriver, which given the right occasion could go on the board and make a wrong connection.

or my favourite is i canibalized a power button(switch+2 wires) from an old case and stick that in

kinda hangs fugly on the side but works.

but the screwdriver is best when you either have lost the manual or are too lazy to search for the pwr_on pins :)

as dan said, you short out the power jumpers with a screw driver.
