Newbie :DELL LAPTOP ERROR CODE 4EOF : 0224: Please help me
I have an Inspiron 9400 DELL Laptop.
When I boot the computer it stops after the Dell logo
I ran the Diag CD which comes with the package.
These are the errors that I get :
Error Code 4EOF : 075D
Msg IDE device falied
self test failed the read portion....
Error Code 4EOF: 0224
with 9/10 different Block numbers
And Error Code 4EOF: 1A44
with different block numbers
Can you please tell me what's wrong and what can be done to fix the prob?
Can I recover the data from the hard drive?
From the first error code it looks like your boot drive has failed (your HDD)
you may be able to put it in to a desktop and see if it's readable.
A quick google search lead me to this:
Inspiron 1501- Error Codes 4E0F:075D & 4E0F:1A44 - Microsoft OS Forum - Software & Operating Systems - Dell Community
That would lead me to believe that the hard drive has failed. To see if any data is recoervable you can always try hooking the drive up to a usb device then access it through another computer.
Yup, I had this too. HDD failure.
I was able to recover mine by doing the following:
Install Acronis WD Edition on my main PC (most Dell laptops have used WD HDDs for the last ~6 years)
Remove HDD from laptop and install as a secondary drive into your primary PC.
If Windows, doesn't detect the "dead" HDD, enter Disk Manager and see if you can initialize your "dead" laptop HDD
If your system doesn't recognize it, stop right here.
If it is recognized, back up your essential data ASAP and then continue below
Buy new WD laptop HDD.
Plug both the laptop HDDs into your main system as secondary drives
Boot your main system ensuring it boots from your primary HDD instead of either of the laptop HDDs
Enter My Computer to make sure all three drives are detected (primary C:, the new laptop drive and the drive that won't work in your laptop)
Start Acronis True Image
Follow the steps to clone the entire "dead" drive onto the new drive
Install the new drive with the cloned system image into your laptop and voila.
Thank you ... but I need more help
Thank you for your reply.
The problem is I have no Desktop.
I do have another laptop. Can I do this procedure on the other laptop?
Also that I am not very good at computer hardware,.....but I can always learn!
Can you tell me all step by step?
Please....I do not have any warranty on my laptop.
Also I just had HDD failure on the other laptop. So I cannot afford another Expense at this point.
So please help.
Unless that other laptop has two hard drive bays, I wouldn't try it. Trying to boot from a failing hard drive (which is what that laptop will do if it detects that hard drive as the only one) will very likely damage the hard drive further - I learned that the hard way when I rebooted a computer that had a failing hard drive, to find that the hard drive was completely unaccessible afterwards.
Get a 2.5" hard drive enclosure and place the damaged hard drive into the enclosure. Afterwards, you can do what SKY mentioned, with the enclosure plugged into a working computer through USB / FireWire / eSATA / whatever, although I had problems with eSATA before, so a USB 2.0 or 3.0 enclosure is your best bet.
I recommend the Vantec Nextar series of drive enclosure, although any other 2.5" enclosure from a decent manufacturer will work: Welcome to Vantec ? Leading Brand of Storage, Thermal, and Mobile Accessories! - PRODUCTS
