Default Laptop not booting

I have a Dell M1210 laptop. Last night it stopped booting from its internal HDD. When I turn the unit on it will load the bios and then just stop with a cursor flashing in the top left corner.

I booted from my win7 dvd and ran chkdsk /f /r and no errors were found. When I do boot from a DVD I am able to see the drive and all the files.

I am stuck. I am not sure what to do to try and conclude if it is just the drive or if he machine itself is no good.

Thoughts or suggestions?

*edit* I have tried to update the bios. I download a newversion and have burnt it to a cd that boots. However when I try to run it I gey an error msg "The subsystem needed to support the image type is not present." It seems this is a 32bit vs 64 bit problem. Not sure how to deal with that either.

**edit** - I have also attempted to run sfc /scannow. It stops with an error saying that it has a repair pending that requires a reboot, please reboot windows now. This I think is left over from me running the repair tools.
