| Touching the case is just as effective as using those straps. I've built hundreds of machines and never used one of them.

I've been working on PC's for 16 years and never used one and never had any problems. It's more an issue dealing with discrete components and not assembled circuit boards.

I handle PCB's all day every day at my job (for 7+ years), and have never had an issue with static...

All they are is a alligator clip to a metal part that has a wire that runs to a resistor so that a shock travels to that and stops.

Wear shoes, do not work on carpet, touch metal case before handling parts. That's been my motto for 5 years, never zapped a component.

The resistor is actually there to protect the wearer (wearee?) from electrical shock while allowing high-voltage to bleed off to ground, but this only applies when working on live circuitry (which you should avoid). If you touch the metal of the case you are already at the same electrical potential as the components inside it, so it would be practically impossible for you to discharge any harmful jolts to your mobo. No worries.

I follow no rules ![]() I rarely touch bare metal before messing with my computer. Don't even bother touching the PSU either. Nor do I use any of these anti-static devices. I stick my hands in and get to work. I don't see what the big deal is with it all. Unless your like standing on carpet with wool socks and rubbing your feet, I don't think you could do any harm.

One more tip: shut down the PSU, then press the On button on the case - this will discharge the caps completly.

I have an unbelievably high amount of static floating around my house, i mean i get zapped so hard that all the blue lights on my keyboard and my saitek x52 flight stick flash off then on when i zap em, on a very regular basis. That said, i regularly stick my hands in the case with nothing more than grabbing the sides to tip the case over, often zapping the case so hard my finger goes numb for a while and she still purrrs along like a well oiled machine. though i dont doubt that one day i wont be so lucky. i dont mind though cause if i fry it, it just means i have an excuse to get all new stuff!! :D

i go through 2 liters of water a day already, its because i'm in a basement suite and the only heat we have is a natural gas floor heater in the living room where my computer is.
