Can you try your keyboard on a different computer? i wonder if its just asus boards that have this issue. i've had the keyboard on my laptop and never noticed anything, but then when i'm using my laptop i rarely reboot it and it takes a long time to boot anyway. Either way, if you get any reply from microsoft leave a post, i'm interested in what they would have to say. Its pretty typical of razor to pass the buck though... i have a razor habu and alot of problems with that mouse too. i ended up throwing it in a drawer and buying a sidewinder. pretty happy with it too.

Question

Dudes, what's up with those backlighted keyboards... I flashed my bios with the latest yesterday, and since then, my computer won't even post if my usb keyboard is plugged in ( Merc Stealth ). I mean, I hear the usual short beep, but the screen stays black...WTF...I've never had that problem before I flashed the bios to version 1004 ( Asus p5k-e wifi board ). Any ideas to get that thing working !? It's getting pretty anoying to plug my old ps/2 keyboard only to boot up my pc, since when I connect it after the post everything's fine :-(

Thx for the help !

Sounds like it's not getting enough juice through the usb port which is strange......

Two things you can try.......

If you haven't already, try a full cmos reset, and then ensure that you've got USB enabled in bios, and that it's set up for "legacy".

You should also let XP sit for a while as it's booting up. What may have happened is that the bios flash reset cmos, and XP doesn't recognise the usb keyboard yet... it should pick it up during boot (may take a while).

Just went through this this morning after changing a PSU.

What worked for me was waiting until XP made it to the "login" screen and then moving the mouse and keyboard to different usb ports in the back of the computer. Took a couple of seconds, but if you see the HD start chugging along after you change them (I did them one at a time, but don't know if that's necessary), you know XP is looking for the appropriate drivers.

I'm not sure why this affects the ability of a usb keyboard to access bios before XP picks it up, but I'm assuming it has something to do with the "hardware aware OS" settings.

I did that, and didn't work. It still won't past through post

You should also let XP sit for a while as it's booting up.

I have a dual boot : Winxp pro 32bit and Vista home premium 64bit... eighter ones ain't booting... I don't even see the "Asus lifestyle screen" when my usb kb is plugged.

What may have happened is that the bios flash reset cmos, and XP doesn't recognise the usb keyboard yet... it should pick it up during boot (may take a while).

How long do you think it could take !? I've waited for about 2 mins and nothing happened !!!

Do you have another usb keyboard you can try?

I'd try that first but then I'd start wondering if the bios flash went as planned...... :(

Nope, I do not have another usb kb... And I did thought the bios flash went wrong, even if it seemed alright, so I flashed it again... with version 1006....haven't changed anything :-(

I still wonder if its not a problem with Asus boards, considering i havnt heard of any problems with backlit keyboards with anything other than asus boards on all the threads on it that i've seen.

SSWILSON, i'm assuming your board was a gigabyte, the hang you had... was it just after post? or while xp was loading? The problem i'm experiencing is just after the post beep, looooong before the hard drives are accessed, so i'm pretty sure, though i could be wrong i suppose, that its not a software related problem.

I've got a pci usb hub, i think i'll try it and see if i still get the hang on bootup.
